Assess the Extent of Bubbling

Before taking any major steps towards resolving this bubbling issue, you’ll first want to assess the extent of the bubbling within your epoxy floor. Mild to moderate bubbling can be fixed with simple spot treatments. More severe issues may require a more involved process where there’s manual finishing performed.

Prepare the Area

Preparing the area you’re going to repair is a crucial step. You’ll want to wear protective work gloves, safety glasses, and a respirator suitable for chemical fumes and dust. Be sure to clear the area of any furniture or obstacles which may be in the way and ensure there’s adequate ventilation in the space.

Sand Down the Bubbles

For minor bubbling:

  • You’ll want to use a handheld orbital sander which should be equipped with a fine-grit sandpaper (around 120 to 220 grit).
  • You’ll want to gently sand the bubbled areas to remove the layer closest to the surface which has formed bubbles. You’ll want to ensure you don’t sand too deep to avoid reaching the underlying concrete or base substrate layer.

For extensive bubbling:

  • You’ll want to use a floor grinder to sand larger areas of the entire floor if the bubbling is scattered throughout the surface of the epoxy flooring.
  • Start with a coarse grit to remove the top layer of the epoxy flooring, then use finer and finer grits to smooth the surface.

Clean the Floor

Once the bubbling areas have been sanded down:

  • You’ll want to thoroughly vacuum the floor to pick up any dust or debris.
  • Wiping the floor with a damp cloth or wet mop will help to ensure the floor is completely cleared of any dust, debris, or particulate matter.

Apply a New Coat of Epoxy

  • When applying a new coat of epoxy, you’ll want to mix the epoxy resin and the hardener, ensuring the manufacturer’s instructions are properly followed. The correct ratios and mixing technique will be listed within the instructions to prevent new bubbles from forming.
  • You’ll want to prepare and spread the epoxy over the properly prepared area, or entire floor if necessary, using an epoxy flooring squeegee or roller. Ensuring there’s an even level of coverage to create a smooth, uniform surface is essential to having a properly finished end product.
  • If you happen to be working with a large area, or the entire floor itself, you may want to consider using a spiked roller to roll over the wet epoxy flooring product. This process of rolling the spiked roller over the affected surface will further help to ensure any potential bubbles are eliminated and it will also help prevent new bubbles from forming during the curing process.

Allow the Epoxy to Cure

  • Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding the complete estimated curing time. It will typically take around 24 to 48 hours to cure, but it may take slightly longer depending on humidity levels and temperature in your area.
